Antique Stain

Border

A product designed to remove spills from your rug before they become stains; a common name brand dry rug cleaner is Capture™.
Exellan
This new fiber-delustered polypropylene is a wonderful material for area rugs. Along with being color fast, it it is permanently anti-static, moth-proof, and is easy to maintain. All you need to do is vacuum regularly, absorb any liquid spills with a moist sponge, and use mild soap and a moist sponge to remove dirt.
Field
The field is the area in the center of your rug (it's surrounded by the border). If your rug has a pattern, the main pattern is displayed in this section of the rug. If the field of a rug doesn't have a pattern or design, it's called an open field.

Attached to the border of your rug and made of braided or knotted yarn, fringe adds a decorative touch to your rug.
Hand Hooked
Hand hooked rugs are secured with hand tied knots and made with a hook or loop that is not cut.
Hand Tufted
Hand tufted rugs are created by hooking material through mesh with a tufting gun, cutting the loop, and securing the fabric with latex backing.
Knot Density
This number represents how many knots are in each square inch of a rug. To determine knot density, turn your rug over and count the number of knots in a square inch of the rug. Rugs with higher knot density are more durable and last longer.

A modified synthetic fiber, modacryllic offers the appearance and feel of wool without the cost. It has a low static level and is moisture and mildew-resistant.
Open Field
A rug with an open field has a center without any pattern or design.

The pattern is the layout of a rug and the overall design it creates.
Pile
Pile refers to the material that makes up a rug. For instance, a wool pile rug is made of knotted wool.
Polypropylene
A fast drying material that resembles wool, polypropylene is a good fabric for rugs because it's moisture, stain, and static resistant. It's also strong, resists wear and permanent stains, and is easily cleaned. Because the color of polypropylene fibers is added in the fiber production, rugs made from polypropylene are notably colorfast.
Runner
A runner is a piece of rug much longer than wide. Runners are often used in hallways and foyers.
Sprouting return to top
A normal condition when loose ends of yarn stick up from the face of a hand hooked rug. If your rug is sprouting, don't pull the loose ends. Instead, use scissors to carefully trim the ends so that they're even with the top of the rug.
Traditional
Traditional Oriental style rugs capture classic styles with their fine oriental design. Many of the designs are based upon designs from the finest Oriental rug collections. They look great in traditional decors and formal rooms.
Transitional
Transitional Oriental-style rugs combine elements of one or more types of styles. They're perfect in almost any decor, especially if your home leans towards the eclectic.
Viscose Rayon
Smooth and shiny in texture, viscose rayon is often used with Oriental style rugs.

Although wool is more expensive than other materials, its stain resistance, durability, and soft texture make it the most common material used in rug making.
