Casual / Cottage Style

In cottage styling, the choice is yours. Rule of thumb is that anything and everything goes. Whatever you love and makes you comfortable. The key words are charm and comfort in the casual or cottage home.

Colors
Soft pastel colors help give a peaceful feeling.  Darker tones can also be used with a more casual look such as navy, forest green or olive, and cranberry.

Style Tips

• Matching Not Required. In fact, not even desired. In a casual/cottage style, rooms often combine a variety of elements to provide a comfortable, lived in feel.  Flea markets are a good source for this style. Remember, anything found can be painted or recovered.
• New use for old piece. Consider using a table bench as a coffee table, an old kitchen cupboard as a storage space in a bedroom or bathroom, or even an old fence section as a bed headboard. Any of these pieces, recovered with your own favorite paint color or cushion can add the perfect cottage flair.
• Imperfection is desired. Perfect is not the word to describe this style.  Floors and wooden furniture with imperfections add to the relaxed, casual atmosphere.
• Keep it Informal. Remember comfort and charm is the key. Accessories you love that give your home that lived in look will work.
• Keep it light. Light and airy should reign supreme in the cottage styled home. Avoid heavy, dark drapes and oppressive art pieces.
